Review: Perfectly Imperfect by Harper Sloan

Perfectly Imperfect

by: Harper Sloan

Blurb
Mirror, mirror ... who's the fairest of them all?
I still cringe when I hear that line. A fairy tale that had girls pretending they were the fairest, the most beautiful, and the most entitled. A fairy tale most couldn't grow out of turned my haunted childhood memories into a living nightmare. Girls who grew up believing that pile of garbage became the meanest of all 'mean girls.'
And those mean girls were right - it was a line meant for all the beautiful people in the world - and I knew the answer would never be me.
The women with long legs, flat stomachs, and perfect chests.
The type of women Kane Masters gravitated toward.
Well, that's definitely not Willow Tate.
No. That will never be me.
Because I'm completely imperfect.
And ... I hate myself.
I have no idea what Kane could possibly see in someone like me when he could have them.

Meet Willow and Kane in the newest stand alone by Harper Sloan!
NOW AVAILABLE on the following retailers:

Excerpt
“Are you nervous right now?”
I nod.
“Tell me why.”  His demand, steady and calm, gives me the courage I need to tell him.  To open a vein and bleed my insecurities.
“I’m not perfect,” I whisper.
“And neither am I, Willow.  I don’t want perfect.  What so many see as perfect, to me, is fake.  Perfect isn’t achievable naturally.  No one, and I mean no one, is perfect.”
I’m shaking my head before he’s even done speaking, but one long finger comes up and presses against my lips before I can speak.
“No, let me finish.  There isn’t beauty in perfection.  It’s as fake as the image the word projects.  Beauty is found in imperfection, Willow, because to admit you’re not perfect means you’re admitting you’re not whole and absolute.  When I think of myself, I see someone willing to admit he’s as far from complete as it gets because, in order to get to that perfection, I need to find the other part of me who will make my life better.  To take all the faults I have and fill them, and only then will I be there.  You see, the way I see it, the only way to become perfect is to find that perfectly imperfect person who brings it out of you.”
When he stops, I swear I might have stopped breathing.  How am I supposed to respond to that?
“Do you trust me?” he asks, his voice strong and sure.
“Yes, Kane.  Nerves or not, I do.”
“Then let me show you what I see when I look at you.”
He brings his hands up, framing my face once again in a way I’m quickly becoming addicted to the feeling of.  His warm eyes implore, begging me without words to let him continue.  I do not intend to stop him, regardless of the butterflies currently taking over my system.  I’m all in.

*ARC provided for an honest review*

When I first read the Dear Reader part I of course knew this book was going to be a tear jerker.  Then I read the Dedication and I was like “Alright, Harper is just getting us ready” then I read the Prologue… let me just say that once I started this part I immediately regretted not buying that Kleenex box at bulk from my super market.  It’s a bad day when you start using your shirt sleeve to wipe off the mess on your face.  Especially when you get a knowing look from your kid basically calling you a hypocrite with their eyes because I admonish her for doing the same thing. Hey, I’m the one who has to do the laundry.  Oh yeah and that tear jerker comment earlier?  What a crock.  Harper freaking obliterated my soul.  You know when people day that they ‘ugly cried”?  Well, there’s another stage that happens beyond ugly cry.  There’s not even a word for it that I know of.  The only thing that I know for sure is I hit that stage and it was devastating.

Never have I ever read a book that I physically felt like my soul was being ripped out.  I also know why this hit home for me too.  I have a little Willow in me as well.  So reading this cut me open and left me bare.  I felt thing that I suppressed throughout the years hoping to forget.  At points I had to put the book down and step away because what I was feeling left me so raw.  I’ve read hundreds of books and not once have I ever had a connection like I did with willow.  I felt her sorrow, her personal disgust, her neglect from the ones who are supposed to love you unconditionally, and her need for acceptance.

I can say that Willow is my new hero and Kane is the teacher that nourished her.

Willow lived a life of cruelty after tragedy hits her home.  She was a conditioned soul that was taught to hate yourself because that is what she in life received.  But then came along a spark, a speckle of hope in the package of Kane Masters.  Kane is a successful actor trying to branch out and be someone other than an actor.  He’s trying his hand at directing and in trying to make his dreams possible he comes across Willow.  Beautiful, voluptuous, Doe eyed Willow.  He feels her before he sees her and wants nothing more than to make her his.  However, with his life in the limelight he’s not sure if he can put Willow in that predicament.  Kane knows that one thing is for sure, though.  Kane Masters is going to show Willows her true worth and he’s prepared to never stop.  But how can Willow stop being her own worst enemy?

The dynamic between the two characters are explosive.  I loved the side stories as well.  The execution couldn’t have been more perfect.  When I read the last sentence I was content.  My soul was weeping with lightness.  I think Harper and Kane are right.  By creating this story you’re giving someone the strength they need to shed their old Willow and become the new Willow they need to be.

This book is going in my top five favorite books to date.  I’m going to recommend this book until I’m blue in the face and then I’ll take another breath and keep recommending.  Thank you Harper Sloan for sharing a piece of you and hopefully make a change in someone’s life.  I know you did that for me.
About the Author:

Harper lives in small town Georgia just a short drive from her hometown of Peachtree City. She (and her 3 daughters) enjoy ruling the house they dubbed 'Estrogen Ocean', much to her husband’s chagrin. Harper has a borderline unhealthy obsession with books; you can almost ALWAYS find her with her eReader attached. She enjoys bad reality TV and cheesy romantic flicks. Her favorite kind of hero--the super alpha kind!

Harper started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep at night; and with a house full of crazy it was the perfect way to just relax. It didn't take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at nothing to have their story told.

Release Date:
September 29, 2015

~~Blurb~~

Ellie Anthony isn’t looking for love. She isn’t even looking for a man, but when Jax Mayson insists on keeping her and her daughter safe, she’s left with no choice but to trust him. Now she just hopes she doesn’t get hurt when she falls hard for a guy who’s known for breaking hearts.

Jax Mayson knows that Ellie is his BOOM the moment he sees her. When he finds out she has a daughter, he realizes he wants a family, and he will do whatever is necessary to keep both of his girls safe, even if that means facing the demons from his past.

~~Selina's 4 Star review~~

*I have received an ARC for an honest review*
Oh my alpha male hotness.  Jax.  I want to be the object of his affection but I’ll take being happy for Jax being with Ellie.  I mean they are pretty amazing together.  I love reading Mrs. Reynolds books.  She has such an amazing gift to make all the woman in the real world want so badly the fictional men she creates.

The book starts with Jax taking over the care of Ellie in the hospital.  I was so looking forward to seeing the BOOM and I wasn’t disappointed in the least.  Jax’s BOOM was pretty much the first thing we read and how Ellie was it for him.  Which if you’ve read the Until Series you’re going to be familiar with.  Ellie already feels a connection towards Jax but isn’t in the right mind set to accept what she feels in her heart to be true.  Her mind and past are something that she is going to need to overcome in order to be truly happy.  Jax’s past with women come back to haunt him and has the potential to ruin everything he wants with Ellie.  Ellie’s past is enabling her to accept what’s right in front of her.

However, Ellie doesn’t just have herself to worry about either.  She has a little girl that’s depending on her and Ellie needs to make sure that she is doing what’s best for the both of them. Good thing Jax knows exactly what’s best for them.

So with the women in Jax’s past life popping in and out, threatening everything, Ellie’s recent hostage experience and learning the brutal truth of betrayal, they have so much to overcome.
Until Jax was a very easy read.  I devoured this book in less than 6 hours.  I was so glad that some of the past characters made an appearance but didn’t over shadow the main characters story. Also, let’s take a moment here and just talk a bit about Hope.  I mean I just was a puddle of emotions whenever Jax interacted with Hope.  She really did have Jax wrapped around her finger tips and it was freaking hilarious.  Talk about alpha dad.  There was this scene where Hope was playing with a little boy and Jax thought the kid, whose was just a toddler himself, was flirting with Hope and Jax apparently thought the little boys, who’s a toddler, intentions weren’t pure.  I’m sorry, I just can’t stop picturing that scene without cracking up.

I loved this book and will be recommending this to pretty much anyone who wants to read about alphas and insta-love.

“P.S.”  I’m still cracking up about that.

Review: The Lies Between Us by M.N. Forgy

Blurb
Cherry’s life growing up was nothing short of a nightmare. Having an abusive father forced her to fend for herself from an early age. Bruised and emotionally broken, she finally escaped, running straight into the comfort that Lip's arms brought. In the beginning, everything seemed to fall into place perfectly. He made her forget the messed-up ways of her life. But secrets can’t stay neglected. They have a habit of revealing themselves regardless of the consequences. Terrified, Cherry can’t speak a word or she’ll lose it all.

Lip is no stranger to the criminal life. Growing up among convicts, he wanted nothing more than to show his worth. He’ll do anything for the club without question, including serving six years in prison. But nobody could have predicted life’s plan. Rugged, tattooed, and wanting nothing more than to have Cherry, Lip is no longer the man whom Cherry remembers. After his release, he came out a beast with more secrets and lies than his cage could hold.

Excerpt
After he leaves, I open his wallet, reading his name, address, weight. All of it.
“Phillip DeLuca.” I taste his name running off my lips as I trace my finger over his picture. He’s so handsome. He’s the kind of guy most people would be afraid of, but not me. I want to get to know him. Lost in a daydream, my car door is yanked open.
“Where the fuck is it, bitch?”
“What?” I shriek as I’m pulled out of the car and slammed forward onto the hot hood. “I don’t have anything!” I scream, trying to pull free. He shoves me back down on the hood. His hand tangled in my hair.
“Don’t think about moving,” he spits, his tone harsh. I roll my eyes and continue leaning over the hood. My heart slams against my chest in pure panic, and my hands shake. He pulls away and leans in to the car. Within seconds, he finds his wallet. Shit.
He peers at me with a fierce energy in his eyes. The intensity has me pulling off the hood, scared out of my mind.
“You have some balls,” he mutters, shoving his wallet back in his pocket. His tone is soft and tender suddenly. I turn my head and eye him angrily.
“Fuck you.” I cross my arms and lean my hip against the car. My choice of words more confident than I’m feeling.
He steps up to me and grabs my hips hard with both hands. My skin burns, and my mouth parts with desire. His brown eyes find mine, and his hands yank my body closer to his. I feel like all the air is sucked from my lungs as I search his dark eyes. Placing my hands on his solid chest to steady myself, my palms buzz with excitement.
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” He looks me up and down and leans in close. “You’d like it if I pushed you over the hood of this car and fucked you ‘til your legs gave out.” His words feather against my lips, he’s so close. I hold my breath, willing my body to pull away, but I don’t move. Just when I think he’s going to kiss me, he grabs my hand and pulls it upward. I furrow my brows and watch as he pulls a pen from his back pocket, pulling the cap off with his teeth. He writes his number and the word ‘Lip’ on my hand.
“Call me. Don’t make me come find you, Cherry.”
“Cherry?” I ask out loud.

“Your swimsuit,” he yells over his shoulder before starting his bike. I look down at my white shirt noticing my cherry bikini peeking out from the bust line. A smile creeps across my face. I know I shouldn’t like him, but I kind of do. Driving past me, he winks and I swear I sigh like a damn fool.

*I was provided an ARC for an honest review*

This is the fourth full length novel in the Devil’s Dust series by M.N. Forgy.  I have been waiting for Lips and Cherry’s story.  I was hooked when I found out how they met when I was reading Shadow and Dani’s story.  Lip and Cherry did have the usual meet.  Their story didn’t start with an accidental run or a flirtatious wink across the room.  Id dint even start with a blind date or a friend introduction.  It started with a feisty little red head with the need to provide for herself and an alpha male who was a little too curious about the hot little number that was stranded on the side of the highway.  It was so magical, exactly how you’d expect to meet your prince charming.  She fakes being in trouble, he tries to help, she swipes his wallet and he finds out.  So what does he do?  He gives her his number.  Swoon.

You get glimpses and a taste of what kind of person Cherry is in the previous books.  She comes from a past that makes you want to just grab her and hold her and let her know that you’ve got her back.  She has a secret that she’s kept from Lip’s too afraid that if he found out she could lose him forever.  However she doesn’t know that Lip is holding a secret of his own.  With both of them keeping secrets I’m over here yelling at my kindle.  Yelling some “Oh, Jesus (and not in the naughty way)” and “What the hell are you doing!”  Both the characters were written very well and I’m so happy to finally get the story.  I have to say I think this was my absolute favorite out of all the Devil’s Dust books.  I felt very connected to Cherry and she became my absolute favorite ol’lady.

Then there’s Lip.  I’m so hot for lips it ridiculous.  I just love Lip and Cherry together.  The writing dynamic kept me hanging on every word.

So to roundabout, their path was not a smooth one.  It had so many bumps in the road I didn’t think they would make it over the mountain.  Did they?  Or did they not?  That is the question.  If you want to find out then go grab your copy now, cause seriously?  You’d probably regret it if you don’t.

Reed: Stubborn (Adjective) - Fixed or set in purpose or opinion; resolute

Beth: Kind (Adjective) – Having, showing, or proceeding from benevolence: kind words

These are some adjectives that can be used to describe these two.  Here’s why.

Reed is a bachelor and had his heart broken all those years ago which makes him the man he is today.  Well man is putting is slightly.  More like man…whore.  He takes a page out of Julia Roberts’s book and doesn’t kiss.  Ever.  It’s just way to emotional and he’s trying to keep it simple.   And by keeping it simple I mean he bangs and ditches or kicks out, whatever the situation calls for.  Reed is a man of many talents and I’m not just talking about wood.  He’s in construction people, get your mind out of the gutter.  Reed is someone you want in your corner.  If you’re lucky enough you become he’s friend and then you become him family.  He’s a great guy with flaws and walls that hopefully some lucky woman will knock down.

Beth is a loner and pretty much has been her entire life.  When the only family she has is no longer in the picture what do you do when you have nowhere else to go.  How far would you go to stay off the streets?  While Beth was going through her mother’s old pictures she soon comes to realize that she is not alone in the world.  Taking a chance and leaving the bad situation she was in she travels to be near family she never knew she had.  Beth is such a kind hearted person.  She’s caring but stern, has a childlike innocence but has a very nasty mind.  I want to be friends with Beth…Beth ß If you’ve read the book you’ll totally get that.

Just like with anything J. Daniels write I always get side cramps from laughing too much.  Every time.  The story line and plot were amazing and was different from the first two books but kept with the series.  I loved reading about Reed and Beth’s story.  I have to say that this book is my favorite.  This series just keeps getting better and better.  I liked how the characters from the previous books were there but didn’t take over the story.  I don’t believe if someone was to read this book without reading Where I Belong (1) or All I Want (2) they would be confused.  It could be read as a standalone. When I Fall was about Reed and Beth’s story with a sprinkle of the previous characters.

I would scream my recommendation on the roof top.  This story is hot so make sure you’re alone…or in a crowded room, whatever floats your boat but realize this,  you’re going to have a huge book hangover.
